Aulonocara have a rich color and are similar to other Malawian by rehlovym. Females Mature at 10-12 months, males at 3-5 months later. About 60 eggs female incubates in the mouth 16-21 days.

Some authors include the genus Barclay in the family pitcher. However in the domestic literature it is accepted to allocate Barclay in a separate monotypic family.
