G. Meinken (1972) proposed to divide the genus into 4 new genera-Barbus (species with two pairs of well-developed maxillary mustache, scales soft), Barbodes (two pairs of maxillary antennae, scales large), Saroea (one pair of maxillary mustache), Puntius (no mustache). However, this division does not reflect the actual situation, because it does not take into account the more significant features of the skeleton structure, and the number of whiskers is different in fish of the same species. Therefore, the species described below are assigned to the single genus b.
